Fixed in Transit - April 2018

Grand Valley State University’s Visual Studies program is proud to present Fixed in Transit. The show features a variety of works from graduate students at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, curated by students from 717 miles away in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This show provided many obstacles for students to overcome through more than just the curatorial concept. Students collaborated to find a delicate through-line in the work of coordinating logistics; from creating a process through which Tyler students could submit their work, to arranging shipping, to working in an intimate gallery, and intertwining the ideas of the 14 GVSU students to formulate the theme of the show, Fixed in Transit.

Fixed in Transit not only speaks to the domestic, curious, memorable reality of the Tyler graduate students' work, but the term “transit” reflects appropriately on the process in which this show was put together. These pieces are carried materials from one place to another (Philadelphia to Grand Rapids). Displayed in the gallery, a quote from poet Lucie Brock-Broido’s poem reads “On the roads, blue thistles, barely visible by night, and, by these, you may yet find your way home.”
